DEEPHAVEN, MINN. (WCCO) — Tuesday marks the beginning of meteorological spring. So when will it really start to feel like winter is over?

Kurt Wolff and Beth Allen spent Sunday cross-country skiing on Lake Minnetonka.

“This winter has been tough,” said Deephaven resident Kurt Wolff.

The taste of sunshine and milder temperatures makes them yearn for spring.

“I’m ready [laughs]I’m totally ready,” Wolff said.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Come in like a lion, come out like a lamb.” And when you look at weather data for March temperatures in Minnesota, is there anything to that?

“Coincidentally in March, at least the first two weeks, they’re looking… quite active as far as storm systems go,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Caleb Gruntzke.

The National Weather Service says March, on average, begins with highs in the low to mid-30s. The month ends with highs closer to 50.

“Our temperatures really start to climb as we come out of winter,” Gruntzke said.

He says that right now, models show the end of March could be warmer than average.

In March 2012, the Twin Cities recorded a record high of 80 degrees for St. Patrick’s Day that year. Last year, Minnesota experienced its first severe weather warnings in March.

However, the signs of winter usually extend into March and beyond. Gruntzke says it’s too early to predict, but an April snowstorm isn’t out of the question.
