They seek to write history!

A group of climbers are set to make history as the first all-black climbing team to reach the summit of Mount Everest, Black company reports.

Phil Henderson is a veteran Himalayan mountaineer and a former instructor at the National Outdoor Leadership School. Recently he started a project, the Everest Loop Expedition, a group of 9 climbers seeking to make history as America’s first all-black climbing team to attempt to climb Mount Everest.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world with a record of over 10,000 peaks in 2020. Of these peaks, only eight have been black climbers, men and women from Africa and Jamaica, but never a single one. American climber.

The team of seven men and two women who call themselves the “dream team”, will attempt this effort not only to realize their personal dreams but also to change the landscape of representation in mountaineering.

“I believe this project is important for the development of our team members as they grow in the mountaineering field. It advances a bigger conversation about blacks and browns in the outdoors and what it means: past, present, and future. Since our entire team is made up of black people, this is an important demonstration of leadership, commitment and teamwork for our community as well as for the climbing world, ”said Henderson.

The group is currently raising funds to finance the expedition. The team intends to document the trip, including their training, planning sessions, and mental and emotional states throughout the process. The group is looking to make a global change in the conversation around black mountaineers.

“A lot of it has to be on a higher scale. It is an emblematic mountain. We want to include blacks and browns in the history of American mountaineering, ”said Henderson.
