The extreme weather conditions in the Alps took their toll on my vacation – it’s a warning of what’s to come

It snows of course in summer in ski resorts, and some, like Zermatt and Tignes, welcome it for their summer skiing. But a change in weather conditions due to climate change, as much of the Alps experienced last week, would be a disaster for mountain resorts, especially this summer.

After a winter season of travel restrictions, dormant ski lifts and closures, revenues for tourist businesses in the Alps have plummeted.

Family hotels and restaurants have closed their doors. Those hanging on by a thread desperately await a sunny summer, open borders and the return of international visitors.

Mountain communities are also keenly aware of the existential threat posed by climate change and extreme weather events – Covid may have hit them hard in the short term, but rising global temperatures and extreme weather conditions could ring the bell. death knell. Each station now has a sustainable development policy and is looking for new ways to reduce its carbon emissions – its future depends on it.

Individuals also have their role to play. As the founder of Ski Flight Free (skiflightfree.org), I campaign to encourage skiers to cut back on their flights – something summer travelers can do too. I have traveled to Switzerland by train, a journey that takes longer than flying, but is infinitely more satisfying and relaxing, compared to the stress of an airport experience.
