Tashi Yangjom of Arunchal Pradesh became the first Indian to climb Mt. Everest this season when she reached the top of the tallest mountain in the world on the morning of 11e May 2021.

Trained at the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang, Yangjom began the ascent on 9e May and peaked on the 11th at 6 a.m.e May. With this achievement, she also became the ninth NIMAS climber to climb Mt. Everest.

Indian Minister of Youth and Sports Kiren Rijiju took to her Twitter account to congratulate her and wrote: “I would like to warmly congratulate Ms. Tashi Yangjom from Arunachal Pradesh for climbing Mount Everest and becoming the first Indian woman to climb Everest in 2021. She was trained at the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh. “

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu tweeted: “Kudos to Tashi Yangjom for scaling Mount Everest and becoming the first Indian woman to climb to the top of Everest this season. Regular training at @ DirangNimas made her a strong climber with blitzkrieg speed. She becomes the ninth climber in NIMAS to climb Everest. “

Tashi Yangjom’s success came just weeks after covid-19 infections were recorded in base camps on Mt. Everest. A Norwegian mountaineer has reportedly tested positive for the deadly virus, putting the world’s largest mountain range at risk of turning into a covid-19 hotspot.
