Sutherland mountain lovers urged to reach literary heights as the writing competition returns across Mountaineering Scotland

The people of Sutherland inspired by lyrical lyrics to the majesty of county peaks and the great outdoors are invited to put pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard.

Mountaineering Scotland’s annual literary competition – the Mountain Writing Competition – is now open.

Last year’s competition saw a record number of entries as the lockdown forced walkers and climbers to find other outlets for their love of the hills, and it is hoped that many now have the virus. writing.

Entries can be prose or poetry, fact or fiction. It can be a walk that is fondly remembered or an imagined vertical adventure and can be about the mountains themselves or those who climb among them.

Whatever you choose to write, as long as it has mountains and climbers at heart, the Mountaineering Scotland Writing Competition 2021 is looking for contributions, with the aim of finding the best in new mountain writing.

The first prize in the prose and poetry sections is £ 200.

The second and third prize winners in each section will receive £ 100 and £ 50 respectively.

In addition to the cash prizes, winners will have their entries published in Scottish Mountaineer, the quarterly Mountaineering Scotland magazine distributed to over 14,000 members.

Winning entries are also published on the Mountaineering Scotland website.

Held since 1987, the competition is open to members and non-members alike and regularly attracts applications from across the UK.

Prose texts should be a maximum of 2000 words. Poetry entries must be a maximum of 200 words and the deadline for all entries is Friday, November 5 at 5 p.m.

Following the large number of entries in 2020, Mountaineering Scotland will use an online application portal for the 2021 competition to manage the applications and the judging process.
