UL Lafayette’s Ragin ‘Cajuns waterski team won their second straight Division 1 national title on Saturday, bringing their tally to eight championships.

The team also won the Division 1 National Championships in 1995, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2019. COVID-19 considerations prevented the championship from being held in 2020.

Victory at the 42nd Syndicate Waterskis Collegiate National Water Ski Championships, October 21-23 at Tri-Lakes in Zachary, Louisiana, capped an unbeaten season for the Ragin ‘Cajuns.

The University of Alabama was second, followed by Florida Southern College, University of Louisiana at Monroe, and Rollins College. Arizona State University, University of Wisconsin and Texas A&M, Ohio State, Miami of Ohio, Clemson and Purdue universities rounded out the 12-team squad.

Teams must qualify to participate in National Championships based on their performance in tournaments leading up to the event. The national championship consisted of three events for women and three for men – slalom, figures and jump. Skiers also competed for individual national titles in each of these events and for the overall women’s and men’s championships. Overall titles are based on combined performance across all three events.

UL Lafayette’s Dorien Llewellyn won the men’s overall title and Luke Outram finished second overall. Alice Bagnoli of the Ragin ‘Cajuns was sixth overall in the women’s standings.

Several Ragin ‘Cajuns have won national titles in individual events. Jaimee Bull and Arron Davies won the women’s and men’s slalom competitions, respectively. Kennedy Hansen placed first in the women’s water ski event.

About 20 other Ragin ‘Cajuns placed in the top 10 in the individual events.

In the women’s slalom competition, Alexandra Garcia placed third, Annemarie Wroblewski sixth and Bailey Austin seventh. In the women’s figures competition, Alice Bagnoli and Bailey Austin finished ninth and tenth respectively. In the women’s jumping event, Hansen placed fifth, Bagnoli seventh and Sage Pottbecker tenth.

In the men’s slalom event, Llewellyn was fifth, Sean Kraus sixth and Outram ninth. For the men, Guillaume Tétreault finished third, Llewellyn fourth and Edoardo Marenzi sixth. Outram and Conley Pinette followed respectively in seventh and eighth position. In the men’s vaulting event, Conley was second and Luca Rauchenwald third.
