Mikaela Shiffrin withdraws from World Cup slalom for the first time in four years

Mikaela shiffrin straddled a gate as he made his way to a podium and potentially a victory, failing to complete a World Cup slalom for the first time in four years.

Shiffrin was on horseback with about 15 seconds left on the second round course in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia on Sunday. Before that, she had an intermediate deviation that was 0.05 slower than Wendy holden, who finished second, and .02 faster than Petra vlhova, who won.

“Stepping over is just … it’s bending the knife when it’s stuck in your heart, except you are the one who stuck it in and you are also the one doing the twist,” Shiffrin said, according to US Ski and Snowboard. “Yes it does, but it shouldn’t. It’s a very light silver lining that my ski up to this point has been feeling great about, but that doesn’t take away any of the frustration, especially after a tough day yesterday as well. [seventh place in a giant slalom]. But it happened and I can’t change it, I can just try harder next time.

Shiffrin’s Slovakian rival Vlhova won by .23 seconds, overtaking Swiss leader of the first heat Holdener. Anna swenn-larsson from Sweden finished third.

Vlhova has won five of the six World Cup slaloms this season and is clearly the favorite for Olympic gold in the Shiffrin marque event. Shiffrin won the other slalom, in Killington, VT, on Thanksgiving weekend, after Vlhova made a big mistake early in her second run after registering the fastest first run.

Holdener, on his 100th World Cup slalom start, clinched his 29th podium in the discipline, all second and third.

The last time Shiffrin retired in a slalom was on January 28, 2018, the last before the PyeongChang Olympics. Then in South Korea, she was shockingly fourth in the Olympic slalom, a little tired of winning the giant slalom the day before in a condensed schedule due to the weather.

The World Cup moves to Schladming, Austria, for the final women’s slalom before the Olympics on Tuesday.
