As the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) sends its largest delegation of athletes to the Winter Olympics, consisting of two alpine skiers and a short-track speed skater, Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, vice -president of the Sports Federation and the Hong Kong Olympic Committee, told the Global Times in an exclusive interview on Friday that their participation in the Winter Olympics should inspire the enthusiasm of young people in Hong Kong for ice sports and offer exchange opportunities with national team athletes.

Hong Kong will send alpine skiers Audrey King and Adrian Yung Hau-tsuen to compete in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which is also the first time in history that Hong Kong has sent two alpine skiers to the Winter Olympics .

Yung will be the first male alpine skier to represent Hong Kong SAR at the Winter Olympics. This is King’s first time competing in the Winter Olympics, according to media reports.

Both greeted a press conference held by the Hong Kong Ski Association on Thursday from a training camp in Bosnia, and King said she was proud to represent Hong Kong at the Games, according to reports. Both are expected to leave Europe for Beijing on January 30 and train with the Chinese national delegation, Hong Kong media outlet Ming Pao reported.

“We are so proud of them, because there are not many athletes trained in Hong Kong to reach the standards of the Olympics, especially in alpine skiing, because we don’t have snow mountains in Hong Kong. So these two athletes have been training overseas, unable to spend time with family and friends,” Fok told the Global Times on Friday.

King, a 19-year-old born in Hong Kong, started training in Europe last June after graduating from high school, and she qualified in Montenegro last month for the Olympic Games in Beijing winter, Ming Po reported.

“I hope their participation in the Beijing Winter Olympics will inspire more young people in Hong Kong to focus on winter sports and inspire more to participate,” Fok said.

Fok, husband of four-time Olympic gold medalist Guo Jingjing, shared his excitement for the upcoming Games and said he hoped the sport would also serve as a bridge to help young people in Hong Kong learn more about the mainland, especially on continental sports. development.

He said he still remembers the day Cheung Ka-long won the men’s individual foil gold medal at Tokyo 2020 last summer. Hong Kong residents gathered in shopping malls and cheered him and Hong Kong table tennis player Doo Hoi Kem in front of giant screens.

“It is also an opportunity for us to organize more activities and exchange programs, helping the Greater Bay Area work together to pave the way for the 15th National Games in 2025,” Fok said.

It is also an opportunity to put aside political agendas and bring young people together in sports exchanges, which will also allow them to know our country on the basis of mutual respect, he added.
