Victoria is on the verge of being hit by a cold storm heading north from Antarctica, with other states also facing plunging temperatures, heavy rain and heavy snow.

Bureau of Meteorologist Phoebe de Wilt said a significant cold front is expected to sweep through Victoria on Monday evening, continuing through Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We expect a lot of snow and rain associated with this,” Ms. de Wilt told NCA NewsWire.

She said the system is slowly evolving, so it will last a few days and also affect Tasmania and New South Wales.

“We don’t yet know where he’s going to be centered,” said De Wilt.

Snow was expected at altitudes above 900m in Victoria and Tasmania, and “could also build up in New South Wales,” she said.

A colder than average May prompted Perisher NSW Ski Resort to open earlier than usual.

The famous vacation destination was slated to kick off the ski season on June 12, but moved this year’s opening to Friday June 4.

Victoria has already shuddered, with Mount Hotham airport recording a low of -7.5C just after 5 a.m. on Saturday.

In the greater Melbourne area, it dropped to -1.4 ° C in the aptly named township of Coldstream just before 7 a.m.

Meanwhile, a strong wind warning was issued on Sunday for the west coast, the central coast, the central coast of Gippsland and the east coast of Gippsland.
