One hundred and eleven pilots scored the goal Sunday, November 7, validating the 2021 Paragliding World Championships with a third task. Cloudy conditions meant the 69 km triangle was relatively slow. American Chris Cote took the win and Seiko Fukuoka was the first woman.

France was once again ranked first nation ahead of the UK, which is also its overall position so far.

Ruth Jessop reports today’s action:

Today was another cloudy day. Inspired by yesterday’s Mission Impossible, another 69 km race was organized, this time heading south.

There were some good, steep climbs just after the start. The competition split into two groups, a group that went to the mountains and a group that went to the apartment. The mountain group came out higher (1600m against 1500m flat) and slightly ahead.

At the south turn, a group went further into the turn in pursuit of a spot of sun. They had a good climb but it took a while for them to come back.

Was it a day when the main tactical decision was to follow the sun on the ground and the triggers on the ground, or the energy in the sky? Even with a completely overcast sky, it was still quite buoyant in height. In the apartments it was really important to look for dry fields with sunshine and to spot where the birds were climbing.

From the third corner, the sky closed again and the leaders were overtaken by those behind and above. Those who got there late had a very difficult time, having missed the cycle.

It was a long and slow task where 111 pilots finally got there.
